NIV Bibles
New International Version (NIV 1984 Edition) is a modern English translation that achieves a good balance between accuracy and readability. It is good for reading and individual or group study. Many good Bibles and study resources are available for the NIV, including the classic NIV Study Bible and the NIV Life Application Study Bible.
Please note: We will not be carrying the new 2011 edition of the NIV. We will continue to make available the 1984 NIV so long as it remains in print.
Why are we only carrying the older edtion?
Based upon trustworthy resources, some of our favorite authors, and testimonies from our customers, we do not trust the accuracy of the new 2011 edition. It, along with the TNIV, (Today's NIV) contain changes which depart from the originial Hebrew and Greek manuscripts to such a degree as to cause us to lack confidence in its reliability. Some of these issues have to do with egalitarianism, gender neutrality; others have to do with changing the English text in such a way as to appear "politically correct." Here is but one example from Hebrews 13:17...
The original 1984 NIV says...
"Obey your leaders and submit to their authority. They keep watch over you as men who must give an account. Obey them so that their work will be a joy, not a burden, for that would be of no advantage to you." Hebrews 13:17 (1984 edition)
The new 2011 NIV says...
"Have confidence in your leaders and submit to their authority, because they keep watch over you as those who must give an account. Do this so that their work will be a joy, not a burden, for that would be of no benefit to you." Hebrews 13:17 (NIV 2011 Edition)
